DRUG ADDICTION AMONG ADOLESCENTS

A high prevalence of drug use among youngsters in India has become a matter of great concern. This alarming trend has caught up across all economic strata in the country. Prevalence of substance use was found to be higher among the urban students (15.1%) than their counterparts (10.7%). The most common reason to start taking drugs is curiosity and peer pressure. Most of the urban students take to smoking also because of a wrong sense of adventure. Children between the ages of 14 and 18 take to alcohol and drugs. Most children are also nicotine dependent. Ac- cording to doctors, children are addicted to prescription drugs like Proxyvon and Spasmoproxyvon which are prescribed for stomach cramps. These drugs harm the child’s brain and in the long run leads to severe complications like epilepsy. A combination of familial and social vulnerability factors lead children and adolescents to use addictive substances. Most teenagers take to doping as a way to cope with conflicts between parents. Thus, family conflict polarizes parents and children which may lead to deviant behavior. Intergenerational conflict also acts as a precursor to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Family environment as well as peer groups has an important bearing on initiation and continuation of substance use. It is necessary to provide health promotion programme directed toward students and their families which encourage attitude shaping among children which could enhance their s elf confidence and adequacy.
