    അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്ക ഭൂമിയുടെ തെക്കേഅറ്റത്തുള്ള വന്‍കരയാണ് അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്ക.സ്വാഭാവികമായി മനുഷ്യവാസമില്ലാത്ത ഇവിടെ 98 ശതമാനവും മഞ്ഞുമൂടി കിടക്കുകയാണ്.ഗവേഷണ ആവശ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി മഞ്ഞുക്കാലത്ത് ആയിരത്തോളവുംവേനല്‍ക്കലത്ത് അയ്യായിത്തോളവും മനുഷ്യര്‍ അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്കയിലെത്തുന്നു.”ആര്‍ട്ടിക്കിനു എതിര്‍വശത്തുള്ള “എന്നര്‍ത്ഥമുള്ള അന്റാര്‍റ്റിക്കൊസ് എന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് പദത്തില്‍നിന്നാണ് അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്കയുണ്ടായത്.   1959-ല്‍ 12 രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഒപ്പുവെച്ച ഉടമ്പടി പ്രകാരം ഇവിടെ സൈനിക പ്രവര്‍ത്തനവുംഖനനവുംനിരോധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.എന്നാല്‍ ഗവേഷണങ്ങള്‍ അനുവദിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.വ്യത്യസ്തരാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നായി 4000ത്തോളം ശാസ്ത്രജ്‍ഞര്‍ അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്കയില്‍ പഠനംനടത്തുന്നു.         വിന്‍സണ്‍മാസിഫ് ആണ് അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്കയലെ ഏറ്റവുംഉയരംകൂടിയകൊടുമുടി. 4892മീറ്റര്‍(16,050 ft)ഉയരമുള്ള ഈ കൊടുമുടി എല്‍സ് വര്‍ത്ത് പര്‍വത നിരകളിലാണ.മറ്റ് നിരവധി മലനിരകളും പ്രധാന വൻകരയിലും സമീപദ്വീപുകളിലുമായുണ്ട്.​ എറിബസ് അഗ്നിപര്‍വ്വതമാണ് ഭൂമിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും തെക്കായുള്ള സജീവഅഗ്നിപര്‍വ്വതം.ഇപ്പോൾ സജീവമല്ലാത്ത മറ്റ് അഗ്നിപർവ്വതങ്ങൾ സജീവമാകാനുള്ള സാദ്ധ്യതയുമുണ്ട്. 2004-ൽ ...
